Acceptable Use Policy

Last updated: 2 September 2026

Hostrivia puts words on a television in front of a room full of people. Most of the content on the site is written by hosts, not by us, so this page sets out what is allowed and who answers for it. It is part of the Terms of Service, and it applies to hosts, to players, and to anything typed into a game — custom questions, custom prompts, quiz-night and venue names, player names, and answers on a phone.

The short version

Play whatever you like with your friends. Do not use Hostrivia to harass anyone, to spread hate, or to do anything illegal. If you are the host, the room is yours to run — and what appears on your screen is yours to answer for.

Not allowed

  • Harassment and bullying. Content that targets, humiliates, threatens or intimidates a specific person, whether or not they are in the room. Naming somebody in a prompt so the room can pile on is harassment, however funny it seemed when you typed it.
  • Hate. Content that attacks or demeans people because of race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, disability, disease, age, sex, gender identity or sexual orientation.
  • Sexual content involving minors. Any of it, in any form, real or fictional. This is the one thing on this page that gets an account closed immediately and reported.
  • Sexual content outside NoFilter. Adult humour belongs in NoFilter, which is labelled 18+ and gated for it. Do not put explicit content into the family-facing games.
  • Illegal content. Anything unlawful where you or your players are, and anything that promotes or instructs in serious criminal or violent activity.
  • Violence and self-harm. Threats, glorification of violence, or content that encourages self-harm, suicide or eating disorders.
  • Private information. Somebody's address, phone number, medical details, financial details or other private data, without their consent.
  • Impersonation and deception. Passing yourself off as somebody else, or presenting Hostrivia as another company's product.
  • Infringement. Content you do not have the right to use, including copied question packs and copied material from another quiz product.
  • Spam and abuse of the platform. Bulk or automated account creation, advertising in game content, scraping our packs, attacking or overloading the service, probing it for weaknesses without our permission, or working around plan limits.

Hosts are responsible for their own content

If you write a question, generate a pack, or paste in a prompt, that content is yours. We do not review it before it reaches the screen, and we could not — the whole point is that you can build a pack about your own pub in the ten minutes before the quiz starts. So:

  • You are responsible for what your custom content says and for the effect of presenting it to your room.
  • You are responsible for who is in that room. That matters most with NoFilter, which is 18+.
  • Read AI-generated packs before you use them. AI generates the questions; you chose to show them.
  • If you host at a venue, your venue's own rules apply on top of this policy.

Our own question packs are a different thing: those are ours, and if one of them is wrong or offensive we want to know — that is what the report control is for.

Players

What you type on your phone goes on the big screen in front of everybody. NoFilter answers are anonymous to the room, but they are not anonymous to the host running the game, and they are not a free pass: the rules above apply to an answer just as they do to a question. Do not use a display name to insult someone.

Reporting something

Two ways, both quick:

  • In a game — use the report control on the host screen to flag a question or prompt from one of our packs. It records which item you reported; it does not send us your game.
  • Anything else — open a request at /support if you have an account, or email [email protected]. Tell us what you saw and where.

We aim to reply within 2 business days, and faster than that for anything involving a child's safety or a credible threat.

What we do about it

We may, depending on what happened and how serious it is:

  • remove or disable content;
  • pull a question or a prompt out of one of our own packs;
  • warn an account, restrict what it can do, suspend it, or close it;
  • report the matter to the authorities where the law requires it or where somebody is in danger.

Where we reasonably can, we tell you what we removed and why, and you can reply to us about it at [email protected]. If you think we got it wrong, say so — we would rather fix a bad call than defend it.

Changes

We update this policy as the product grows and as we learn what actually goes wrong. The date at the top is the version you are reading.

Written by the team that runs Hostrivia. It describes our own moderation practice; it is not legal advice and has not been reviewed by a lawyer.
